Jevon Gibb, the newly appointed CEO of The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership, has big plans to elevate the community’s economic development. Taking over from Gil Staley, who led for nearly two decades, Gibb is focused on making The Woodlands an even more attractive destination for businesses.
A New Approach to Economic Development
Gibb’s approach differs from his predecessor’s by taking a more proactive stance. While the community has been successful in attracting businesses, Gibb emphasizes the importance of external marketing and going after specific business opportunities. His goal is not just to react to incoming inquiries but to actively pursue the industries that will help secure The Woodlands’ future success.
“We’ve always done a great job of convening business leaders, but now we need to activate them and pursue the deals that will set us up for the next 50 years,” Gibb said.
Overcoming Challenges in Business Recruitment
One of the challenges Gibb faces is overcoming perceptions about The Woodlands being too selective in its business recruitment. Through recent engagement with Newmark Global, it was revealed that the community’s reactive approach to marketing has led to fewer opportunities. To address this, Gibb plans to improve communication and target high-profile projects in industries like energy and chemicals, competing with top cities such as Frisco, Phoenix, and Atlanta.
“We may not be the biggest community, but we need to be the best at what we do to compete with the best,” Gibb explained.
The Woodlands’ Growth Over the Next Decade
Looking ahead, Gibb is optimistic about The Woodlands’ growth, especially when interest rates drop. He predicts a rise in office development and further growth in the Town Center and Hughes Landing areas, with additional retail and amenities enhancing the quality of life. Although the area is largely built out, Gibb sees significant opportunities for vertical development in the coming years.
“We’re built out to the borders, but we have plenty of space to build up,” Gibb stated.
Under Jevon Gibb’s leadership, The Woodlands is poised for continued growth. His vision of a proactive, targeted approach to business recruitment, combined with a focus on long-term development, will help shape the community’s future and secure its place as a key player in the Texas economy.
