In a swift move, the Tennessee Titans have reportedly secured Robert Saleh as their new head coach, according to sources from NFL Network. Saleh, who is currently serving as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, was also slated to interview with the Arizona Cardinals. However, the Titans moved quickly to finalize a deal before that could happen, making Saleh their top choice to lead the team forward.
Saleh’s Return to Head Coaching
At 46 years old, Robert Saleh will return to a head coaching role after his previous stint with the New York Jets, where he was in charge from 2021 to 2024. During his time with the Jets, Saleh posted a 20–36 record, with quarterback instability hindering the team’s ability to make progress. Despite the struggles, Saleh’s time with the Jets helped him refine his leadership style and defensive expertise, preparing him for his next challenge with the Titans.
A Defensive Powerhouse in San Francisco
Before heading to New York, Saleh gained recognition as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, where he helped establish one of the most dominant defenses in the NFL. Despite significant injuries to key players like Nick Bosa and Fred Warner during his final season in San Francisco, Saleh’s defensive unit still managed to finish 13th in the league in scoring defense. The 49ers posted an impressive 12–5 record that season, remaining in playoff contention until the very last week.
Aiming to Strengthen the Titans’ Defense
The Titans’ defense, which ranked 28th in points allowed per game last season, gave up an average of 28.1 points. With Saleh’s arrival, the team is expected to see immediate improvements in both the structure and schemes of their defense. His defensive-minded leadership is seen as the perfect antidote for a struggling unit that is in dire need of reinforcements.
Saleh is expected to take on the responsibility of calling defensive plays for the Titans, a role he did not have during his time with the Jets. His ability to build aggressive, high-performing defenses will be crucial in elevating Tennessee’s defense to a higher standard.
Rebuilding the Titans After a Tough 2025 Season
The Titans finished the 2025 season with a disappointing 3–14 record, leading to the firing of former head coach Brian Callahan after a rough 1–5 start. This move signaled a reset for the team, with general manager Mike Borgonzi taking charge of the coaching search. Saleh, known for his defensive acumen and leadership, will be tasked with restoring the team’s competitive edge, beginning with a defensive overhaul.
Quarterback Development at the Forefront
While the defensive improvements are expected to be immediate, Saleh’s success in Tennessee may depend on how well the team develops its young quarterback, Cam Ward. The rookie signal-caller showed potential during his first NFL season, throwing for 3,169 yards, 15 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. As the Titans hold the No. 4 pick in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, quarterback development will be key to the team’s future success.
Saleh’s next major challenge will be assembling an offensive coaching staff that can nurture Ward’s growth and help him become a franchise quarterback. If Saleh can successfully integrate both a revitalized defense and a more efficient offense, the Titans could quickly return to relevance in the AFC.
