A Salt Lake City funeral shooting left two people dead and several others injured after an altercation broke out in a church parking lot on Wednesday. Immediately afterward, police launched a manhunt for the suspects.
The shooting happened outside a chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the same time, a funeral service was underway inside the building. According to Salt Lake City police spokesperson Glen Mills, an argument in the parking lot quickly escalated—and then shots rang out.
So far, police say at least eight adults suffered injuries. Two victims died, and three others remain in critical condition. However, officials have not yet released details about the remaining victims’ conditions. As part of their investigation, officers are now interviewing dozens of funeral attendees as potential witnesses. Additionally, the FBI has joined the effort to support local authorities.
Importantly, law enforcement stressed that the Salt Lake City funeral shooting was not a targeted attack on the church or its faith. “We don’t believe this was a targeted attack against a religion or anything like that,” one officer said during a live press conference.

In response, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement quickly. Moreover, it expressed deep concern that violence would strike a sacred space meant for worship and mourning.
To date, authorities have not named suspects or revealed a clear motive. That said, they are moving fast to gather evidence and speak with witnesses.
