2 mins read

Legendary filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele have been found dead in their Los Angeles home. Police are treating the incident as an apparent homicide. Officers and firefighters responded to a medical aid call in Brentwood—an upscale LA neighborhood—on Sunday afternoon.

Authorities confirmed a 78-year-old man and 68-year-old woman died at the scene. Though they did not name the couple publicly at first, a family spokesperson later verified their identities. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” the statement read. “We are heartbroken and ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

The Los Angeles Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Robbery-Homicide detectives arrived quickly. As of Sunday night, police had not arrested anyone. They also said they were not actively seeking a suspect or person of interest. Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton noted that both bodies remained inside the home more than six hours after first responders arrived. Officials declined to share details about injuries, weapons, or possible causes of death. The coroner’s office will determine those facts.

Rob Reiner shaped generations of cinema. He first rose to fame as “Meathead” on All in the Family, a role that earned him two Emmys. Later, he directed beloved classics across genres—Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men. His 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap became a cult phenomenon and earned enduring acclaim. He even returned to the franchise this year with Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

Beyond directing, Reiner acted in films like The Wolf of Wall Street and shows like The Bear. He also co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, a powerhouse studio behind major hits.

Tributes flooded in from across Hollywood and politics. Kathy Bates, who starred in Misery, said Reiner “changed the course of my life.” Ben Stiller called him “a huge loss” and praised Spinal Tap as “one of the best comedies ever made.” Eric Idle shared that he’d spoken with Reiner just the night before. “He was clever, talented, and very thoughtful,” Idle wrote.

Josh Gad described Reiner as “one of the greatest directors of our time” and praised both him and Michele as “kind and caring souls.” John Cusack, Elijah Wood, and James Woods also expressed shock and grief.

Reiner was equally known for his activism. A lifelong Democrat, he campaigned for marriage equality, children’s education, and tobacco regulation. Former President Barack Obama said, “Rob’s work gave us cherished stories—but beneath them was a deep belief in the goodness of people.”

Nancy Pelosi called him “remarkable in every endeavor,” adding that Michele was his “indispensable partner.” California Governor Gavin Newsom highlighted Reiner’s advocacy for civil rights and early childhood development. LA Mayor Karen Bass called the deaths “a devastating loss for our city and country.”

Michele Reiner, an actress, photographer, and producer, founded Reiner Light. The couple married in 1989 after meeting on the set of When Harry Met Sally. They had three children together. Rob was previously married to Penny Marshall and is the adoptive father of her daughter, Tracy.

As the world mourns, the Rob Reiner apparent homicide case remains under active investigation. For now, fans remember not just his films—but his humanity, humor, and unwavering voice for justice.
